Gait deviations are abnormal walking patterns that are common in individuals with cerebral palsy. This condition is caused by damage to the motor control centers in the brain, resulting in impaired movement and muscle coordination. Gait deviations can vary widely, depending on the type and severity of cerebral palsy, as well as other factors such as muscle strength, flexibility, and tone.
Gait Deviations in cerebral palsy
Scissoring: where the legs cross or overlap while walking.
Steppage gait: where the foot is lifted higher than normal to clear the ground while walking.
Foot drop: where the foot drags on the ground while walking.
Spastic gait: where the muscles are stiff and have difficulty relaxing, causing a jerky or bouncy walk.
Ataxic gait: where the individual has difficulty coordinating movement, leading to unsteady and uncoordinated walking.
