Chronic ischemic leg ulcers are a common and debilitating condition that can lead to significant physical distress. Effective management of these ulcers requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes proper wound care, risk factor reduction, and the use of appropriate wound-healing agents. Wound care: Proper wound care is the cornerstone of management.
Risk factor reduction: Addressing underlying risk factors such as peripheral artery disease, hypertension, and diabetes is critical to improving wound healing and preventing recurrence.
Lifestyle changes: such as quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and increasing physical activity can help reduce these risk factors.
Wound-healing agents: Topical agents such as growth factors, antimicrobial dressings, and debridement agents may be used to promote wound healing.
In some cases, systemic therapy may be required to improve blood flow to the affected limb and promote healing.
