The Sustainability Research Center at Deraya University offers distinguished events to the community. We are actively seeking to support sustainable development initiatives and community engagement. The center’s recent activities have drawn attention to the importance of including cultural diversity in sustainability initiatives and impress governance values in the next generation of leaders
Studying the Contribution of Cultural Diversity to Sustainable Development
An interesting session titled “Can Cultural Diversity Promote Sustainable Development?” was one of the most memorable programs at the Centre recently. Participants requested to speak about how cultural diversity can be a transformative force in addressing social and environmental issues at this event, which was carried out in partnership with the prestigious Goethe-Institut
A diverse group of people eager to discover the possibilities of cultural diversity attended the event, which was organized thanks to the Goethe-Institut, the world leader in promoting intercultural communication and education.
The event began by reviewing the basic idea that cultural diversity can benefit society and be a powerful tool for sustainable development. The speaker provided an example of how bringing together people from different cultural backgrounds can lead to new perspectives on regional and global issues.
The talks also emphasized how cultural diversity enhances creativity and critical thinking, two vital qualities in today’s complex and fast-paced world.
Interactive Activity: Discovering Individual Differences within Shared Cultures
Participants participated in a special activity in the Cultural Diversity event to highlight the small differences that make people unique. Despite having a similar environment and culture, this interactive game allowed players to explore and express different aspects of their past, passions, and perspectives.
The game aimed to remind them that diversity exists on many levels and that people’s experiences and perspectives can vary widely even in a shared environment. By showing that diversity does not only include nationalities or languages but also each person’s unique characteristics, this game succeeded in encouraging respect and understanding among the group.
Governance and Sustainable Development at Deraya University
The Sustainability Research Center at Deraya University recently held an inspiring session in partnership with the National Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development, delving into integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into academic programs. The program emphasized the need to incorporate universal principles into education to foster sustainability, ethical leadership, and good governance.
The central emphasis of the discussion was on how to incorporate the SDGs into educational frameworks to help students understand the importance of sustainability from many perspectives. This approach goes beyond theory, aiming to foster a generation of leaders who are not only knowledgeable but also equipped with practical skills and values to address real-world challenges.
By adopting SDGs as a central focus—such as Quality Education, Gender Equality, Responsible Consumption, and Climate Action—Deraya University is actively working to make sustainability a meaningful part of students’ learning journeys.
The session opened with discussions on embedding the SDGs into the curriculum, highlighting how aligning educational content with these 17 global goals can shape students’ understanding of sustainability across sectors.
This framework not only educates students on sustainable practices but also helps them understand their role in global sustainability efforts. Deraya University aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how the Sustainable Development Goals impact their education, careers, and communities by aligning with goals such as quality education, gender equality, responsible consumption, and climate action.
The following 17 Sustainable Development Goals discussions were held to illustrate the scope and complexity of this approach:
Economic Stability – No Hunger – Good Health and Well-Being – Gender Equality – Quality Education – Sanitation and Clean Water – Clean and Affordable Energy – Decent Work and Economic Growth – Infrastructure, Innovation, and Industry – Reduced Inequality – Sustainable Communities and Cities – Responsible Production and Consumption – Climate Action – Life on Land – Life Below Water Equity, Peace, and Strong Institutions – Cooperation to Achieve the Goals
Participants explored practical ways to achieve these goals through lively discussions. Developing long-term educational strategies requires a venue for in-depth discussion and knowledge sharing, which the workshops provide. In discussing different approaches to integrating the SDGs into academic programs, participants highlighted ways in which education and government can work together to promote a sustainable culture.
Deraya University’s commitment to these principles highlights the critical role that education plays in sustainable development. The university encourages students and faculty alike to contribute positively to their communities, ensuring that governance and sustainability are integral to both their academic and personal growth.
Deraya University’s embrace of these ideals reflects its commitment to educating students for a future in which social progress is motivated by sustainability and good governance. These efforts equip students with a solid basis for leading the creation of a just and sustainable society.
Linking Academic Understanding to Real-World Applications
